their hair out in disbelief. what happened last night is the historical norm. had mr. romney lost, given the fact he is behind the polls and given the fact that challengers basically always win the first debate against an incumbent president, it was notable and would have been fatal for the romney campaign. the fact it was the president who lost instead says what exactly about the rest of the race? exactly. this modern history right here, the complete record of the precedent for this thing in american politics, after what just happened at they debate last night. in terms of who won the first debate, the record for sitting presidents is 1-6 now after last night. but in terms of who went on to win the election after those first debates, look -- it's dead even. wins, three. losses, three. half these guys won, half these guys lost when it came to election day. and this year, who knows. the great dan rather joins us next. >>> dan rather joins us next for the interview. and that the president seemed unfocused and let mr. romney get away with a lot of factually challenged stuff that he should have been confronted on. what's your take on it? >> i think romney might have had a theatrical aggression. the case the president has been making to the american people, why are voters in ohio and florida concerned about mitt romney? he firmly and proudly doubled down on his plan. he dishonestly tried to run away from that tonight. in terms of wall street reform, romney said even though reckless behavior on wall street contributed to the recession, i want to roll that back. so we see the entire campaign as one story we're telling and for the american people listening tonight who has the better plan for the middle class, who they can trust to make sure that wall street doesn't wreck our economy again, the president did a good job of laying that out. >> david plouffe, this is al sharpton. i'm one that thinks mr. romney might have made a mistake tonight. i think he was theatrical, but he gave so many answers that will be proven to be untrue. is it not the strategy of obama campaig

that mr. romney has been at the campaign headquarters in boston preparing. why is the president in nevada? >> well, it's a battle ground state as you've noted earlier and i remember covering john kerry in 2004. a debate against the president, then president bush in arizona and did his debate prep in new mexico, a media attention in the battle ground state and he's trying to do that president obama in nevada and the foreclosure crisis and the unemployment rate double digits and the president knows economic challenges here and hoping he'll get a little play for his message and his plans and rally and it's going to start a few moments behind me with someone with early voting starting in nevada in a couple of weeks and they feel good in the obama camp. nevada even though it's hard hit, the polls show the race very close and they think mitt romney should be far ahead with the economic message and people are hurting here. they think it's a sign that romney is not breaking through and the president is doing pretty well in nevada. >> harris: you bring up a good point. this first debate focusing o

working hard for his eelection should just quit. i don't believe he's in it to be fair. mr. romney did well, granted the media set the bar for him so low that if he didn't fall through a hole in the stage, he met expectations. perhaps the bar for the president was set too high or perhaps the man that some thought they knew back in 2008 never really existed. back then words like messiah and the new jfk were put on him, they weren't used by him. last night we saw mr. obama for what he really is, human. to think he's anything above that is unfair to the man. lisa in connecticut says i'm hoping that there is a plan to lull him and then crush him the next time with real facts, figures and no stumering or stammering. mitt romney still running on trust me. his positions keep changing. i'm not sure he gets credit for the message but the delivery was good. obama didn't have his teleprompter and looked confused and lost without it. obama has a poor record the last four years and romney had a chance to attack it without the liberal press protecting obama. pete in georgia says, don't you know? i'm

that the media is rooting for mitt romney to do well in these debates. she goes on to say that people think mr. romney's rich, doesn't understand regular people's lives, not sure he can turn things around. he has to prove that he's a pair of safe hands. if romney hasn't been able to do that so far, how can he lay the ground work for it now? >> look, he's got a huge audience. a number of these people have not seen him to the extent that all of us have seen him. >> and an unfiltered audience. there's no filter between the two now. >> yeah, definitely it's an opportunity for him. it's going to be hard. we donate ha't have a lot of ti left. a narrative has been set. these swing states have seen a ton of advertising from the obama campaign, casting hip as a very rich, out of touch guy. and i've got to tell you, it's working. i was in new hampshire yesterday. i was in a very economically depressed part of the state, and those voters, they have a very strong impression of mitt romney. they do see him as somebody who is not an advocate of the middle class. somebody who's a little too rich to understan
